Meeting With Lalita Awhale

On May 16, 2024, at a meeting wait, Lalita Awhale outlined the current situation and challenges in Awhalwadi village, which was separated from Wagholi and established as a new Gram Panchayat in 1983. Despite this separation, Awhalwadi faced issues with inadequate space for its Gram Panchayat and insufficient water supply due to the expanding population of Wagholi. Currently, water is sourced from bore wells and tankers. Available facilities include nutrition support from Anganwadi, bi-monthly vaccinations, village garbage management, and prohibition of liquor sales. However, the village needs a primary health centre, has limited educational facilities beyond 7th grade, and faces decreasing agricultural activities due to urbanisation. The report highlights the village’s needs for improved water availability, waste disposal guidance, and interest in agriculture among children. The Awhalwadi Gram Panchayat has offered space for children’s activities to support the foundation’s initiatives.

Meeting With Zilha Parishad School Principal

We are pleased to announce the establishment of a Reading and Storytelling Center for the children of Awhalwadi. This initiative began with a productive meeting with the principal of the Zilla Parishad school, followed by a series of classroom visits where we extended personal invitations to the students.

We are thrilled to report that 79 students eagerly signed up for this program on the spot, demonstrating their keen interest in engaging with literature and storytelling.

The enthusiasm for this initiative was further highlighted on Makar Sankranti, when several children arrived at our unit to request storybooks. This immediate and enthusiastic response underscores the children’s excitement and sets a promising foundation for a vibrant and enriching educational environment.

This center aims to foster a love for reading, enhance literacy skills, and provide a space where children can immerse themselves in the joy of storytelling. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this initiative will have on the children of Awhalwadi.

Meeting With Canara Bank Manager

Our team recently met with the Canara Bank manager to explore various financial schemes available for women and children. This meeting was crucial in identifying the support systems and banking services that can aid in the economic upliftment of the Ahwalwadi community.

Key Actions:

  • Individual Bank Accounts: We are committed to ensuring that every woman in our program has her own bank account. This initiative is fundamental in promoting financial independence and responsibility. By having their own accounts, women can directly manage their earnings, save money, and gain financial autonomy.

  • Financial Literacy Training: To support this initiative, we are organizing training sessions to educate women on managing their finances. These sessions will cover essential topics such as basic banking operations, budgeting, saving, and understanding financial products. Additionally, we will provide training on using digital banking services, including mobile banking and online transactions, to make banking more accessible.

  • Children’s Financial Well-being: The bank offers several schemes tailored for children’s education and future savings. We will educate mothers about these schemes, ensuring they can plan effectively for their children’s future, securing their education and overall development.

By integrating these financial empowerment initiatives, we aim to create a culture of financial awareness and independence. This approach will enhance economic stability, promote gender equality, and build confidence among the women of Ahwalwadi, enabling them to contribute more effectively to their households and community.
